Every bride wants to look stunning on their wedding day. There is so much time and thought and preparation that goes in to everything you decide to wear - from the veil on the top of your head to the shoes on your feet. This blog helps you navigate through some considerations in relation to the options you have when picking out your dress and other details to wear on your special day. My biggest suggestion that I can give to any of my recently engaged brides, is to have an open mind about it all. Decide on what style best reflects your personality and let it guide you through all of your decision making. Staying true to who you are and what makes you feel beautiful and comfortable is most important.
1. Something blue
All brides know this traditional little saying - something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. Most of it is easy to gather and falls into place before your big day. For instance your dress is new, maybe your earrings are borrowed, and your necklace is an old family heirloom. However the something blue can sometimes be tricky to find or know exactly how to incorporate it into your wedding details. Here's a list of ways you can add those little touches of blue:
- garter
- shoes
- undergarments
- earrings
- bouquet
- hairpiece
- nail polish
2. Wedding dress styles
When picking the right dress for you, I always suggest that brides keep an open mind. Most girls have dreamed of their wedding dress their entire life and have an exact idea made up in their mind. However, taking your body type, budget, and the season you are getting married in, into consideration is always a good idea. For instance, decide on the priorities of your wedding day in relation to your budget. If photography and the venue is more important, than perhaps spend less on your dress. Also if you are getting married in the middle of winter, you may not want a strapless dress. You might instead pick something with sleeves and an ivory or off-white tone. Whereas if you are getting married in the middle of summer, you might want strapless and a more light weight material. If you are currently dress shopping, here's a list of styles to try on to see which fits best with your body type and personality:
- A-line
- Ballgown
- Mermaid
- Sheath
- Column
- Trumpet
- Empire
- Tea-length
3. Reception attire
After the ceremony, it's important to think about comfort and how you'll transition from the formal look of your ceremony to a more practical attire for celebrating and dancing. For some brides, that means changing their dress entirely. For other's it might be bustling their dress. It's so very important to not only know how to bustle your dress, but to practice it before your big day. Bustling can be hard and very time consuming. You don't want to miss a huge portion of your reception trying to get it right.
4. Finding the right shoes
Surprisingly, most brides don't realize that shoes can be whatever they want the day of their wedding. In most instances, your wedding dress will cover up your shoes. Therefore it's important to go with a shoe that is comfortable and even sentimental, over something that is uncomfortable and hard to walk in. Also, take into consideration that heels are not the best option for outdoor weddings because they tend to sink in the grass or gravel. Regardless of what shoes you decide on, it's also important to try them on prior to your big day. Not only to make sure they fit right, but also to make sure they are the right height for your dress alternations.
5. Veils
Veils are always so much fun and make the best photos. I suggest picking one that matches the style of your dress and fits in with the flow of your wedding day. Some styles tend to be more formal, while others are more simple, yet elegant. Here's a list of different styles to perhaps try on and choose from:
- Birdcage
- Blusher
- Elbow
- Ballerina
- Fingertip
- Mantilla
- Tiered
- Cathedral
Regardless of which veil you choose, be sure to try it on with your dress and have your hair styled with it prior to your wedding day. You want to make sure that you like the completed look and that it feels comfortable and secure with your hair.
